Rep. John Faso’s staff confirmed that the representative was unharmed in the crash, which occurred in Crozet, Virginia when an Amtrak train struck a garbage truck, according to multiple media reports. The lawmakers were on their way to a retreat at The Greenbrier in West Virginia in which President Donald Trump was scheduled to make an appearance.
At least one person was killed and another seriously injured. Sen. Bill Cassiday wrote on Twitter that there were three people in the truck straddling the lane when it was struck. According to ABC News, many of the lawmakers with medical backgrounds tended to the crash victims while waiting for EMTs to respond to the scene. No serious injuries were reported among the representatives aboard the train.
It was not clear how many GOP House members were on the train at the time of the crash. On CNN, Faso said “I think everyone on the train is OK, making note that he was in the third car of the train. “I don’t know that for sure, it’s a long train. But most of the concern is for the people outside.”
